Will radiologists be replaced by AI?
“Replace the “I” with “innovation/integration” and replace the “A” with “augmentation/harmonization” (in Italian armonizzazione, ed.) – said Carlo Quattrocchi at the end of the conference organized at the Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento by CISMed – UniTN on May 8, 2023. To use artificial intelligence in this multidisciplinary field, the algorithms are there, experts say. They know how to do their job, they do it well, but we need to figure out how to get them to do it together with physicians. The need to bring innovation to the ground, even with all the difficulties that may be encountered, emerged strongly at the event, because AI has rapidly become an integral part of healthcare activities and processes. Recently, the development of algorithms for disease detection and characterization in medical imaging has led to consideration of solutions to support Diagnostic Imaging with certification for clinical use. The current context of the hospital network in the Trento Province Healthcare System (#APSS) and the provision of a single province-wide platform for medical image storage and management may provide a concrete opportunity to systemically implement AI solutions.
Thus, to answer the question posed in the title, there is a need to push in this direction by increasing diagnostic capabilities, especially in a historical period of resource shortages, enhancing the expertise available throughout the local area, and enabling rapid image triage that will guide radiologists to prioritize evaluation of diagnostic examinations with major findings.
The event was organized on May 8, 2023, intercepting the closing of “All Digital Week,” a European campaign to raise awareness about digital transformation, and the opening of the ASVIS-sponsored Festival for Sustainable Development.
