Primed-PD 2025 project to combat Parkinson’s disease approved
Artificial intelligence and innovative, sustainable approaches aligned with so-called “3P” medicine
Predictive Research through Integrated, Primed-PD 2025, aims to develop additional tools to combat Parkinson’sdisease, based on artificial intelligence and innovative, sustainable and oriented approaches to so-called “3 P” (predictive, preventive and personalized) medicine. The initiative builds on the earlier NeuroArtP3 project, coordinated by the IRCCS Policlinico San Martino Hospital in Genoa and co-funded by the Ministry of Health, in which the Autonomous Province of Trento, the local healthcare authority, and Fondazione Bruno Kessler participated
On the proposal of Health and Social Policies Councillor Mario Tonina, the Provincial Council approved funding of €300,000 for the project. Primed-PD 2025 will be conducted by the Trento Province Healthcare System (now Asuit), which will also serve as coordinating body, with the involvement of Fondazione Bruno Kessler, CIBIO/CISMed at the University of Trento, and support from the Competence Center on Digital Health, TrentinoSalute4.0.
“Parkinson’s disease is one of the most significant challenges facing health systems today, not only because of its growing prevalence but also due to its profound impact on quality of life, families, and the overall sustainability of healthcare,” said Councillor Tonina. “It is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s, with steadily rising numbers. This reality calls for moving beyond traditional models of care, as the rising incidence can no longer be explained solely by population aging but also reflects environmental factors and lifestyle changes. Joining the Primed-PD 2025 project is therefore an important step to strengthen clinical research. Expanding patient enrollment and leveraging established procedures will further refine algorithms capable of predicting clinically relevant events—such as falls, motor fluctuations, or cognitive impairment—improving the ability to intervene in a timely and targeted way.” the Councillor concluded.
Developed over 36 months, the project will use data already available within the Trento Province Healthcare System in innovative ways to improve prediction of Parkinson’s disease progression and the onset of major complications. Within a predictive and personalized medicine framework, the study aims to develop AI-based tools to support earlier and more targeted patient care, helping to improve both quality of care and health-service planning.
