Between tradition and digital innovation: the “Percorso Nascita” and the TreC Mamma application presented in Val di Sole

18 December 2024 By

The meeting organized in Malè on 3 December 2024 allowed the population to explore the services and applications developed to support women and families during pregnancy and the first years of the child’s life.

The event was organized by a broad institutional partnership that includes the Trento Province Healthcare System (APSS), which coordinates community clinics and hospital services in Trentino,  the Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT), which supports activities under the “Laboratorio territoriale Vivere la Salute in Val di Sole” project, and TrentinoSalute4.0 (TS4.0), center for the development of digital innovation in health, which, with Fondazione Bruno Kessler, has developed and manages the  Salute+ and TreC Mamma apps, under the “First 1000 days of life” program.

“The joint involvement of these bodies testifies to the commitment to innovation and maternal and child health, with a focus on the Val di Sole rea and its specific features” – said Fabrizio Taddei, director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit of the Santa Chiara Hospital in Trento, and director of the Inter-hospital OB-GYN Department.

Claudia Paoli, midwife and director of the Health Professions Department for the Inter-hospital OB-GYN Department, explained to the audience in the room, and to those connected by videoconference, the structure of the “Percorso Nascita” prenatal care services, which represents the set of all the services offered to promote the health of women and newborns and to provide appropriate assistance in the periconceptional phase, in pregnancy, in labor and delivery, and subsequently during breastfeeding and the postpartum period. Claudia Paoli presented the demographic data and the use of the services, with a focus on Val di Sole and Val di Non. In general, the numbers in the Province of Trento indicate:

  • over 90% of pregnant women in Trentino access the APSS “Percorso Nascita” 3,721 born
    in 2023, with a declining trend in 2024: 3,353 as of November 30,  2024;
  • the average age at first child is 30.8 years, with differences between Italians (31.4) and foreigners (28.3);
  • 59.5% of women participate in childbirth classes, but among those with low-risk pregnancy and full-term delivery the percentage reaches 87.5%

“In 2023,” Paoli specified, “we recorded a significant adherence to childbirth meetings, with an 87.5% participation among nullipars.”

Anna Gianatti, midwife coordinator of the Cles and Mezzolombardo Community Clinics, described the “Community Clinic activities and prenatal care services in her talk: state of the art of the activities in Val di Sole and Val di Non”. “In Val di Sole” – said Gianatti – “postpartum home support is actively offered and provided to all women, and in 2024 78% of women were able to obtain a home visit by the midwife, demonstrating the importance of proximity to new mothers”.

One of the goals of the meeting, which was open to the entire population, was also to present data on the usage of digital services and applications developed by Fondazione Bruno Kessler. App demos were shown that facilitate access to the services offered by the Trento Province healthcare system and ensure increasingly personalized and accessible care.

“TreC Mamma” – added Fabrizio Taddei – “represents a breakthrough in digital support for families, with over 24,000 views of educational content since its launch. These data and these initiatives reflect a concrete commitment to maternal and child health and the integration of innovative technologies to improve the care experience “.

TrentinoSalute4.0 project manager Francesca Perini explained in detail how TreC Mamma works. “The App” – Perini said – “was launched in August 2023 and 3,572 mothers are currently using it. The application offers a personalized agenda of appointments and visits, access to local services and educational support. ” The data on usage collected in recent months show that the content most consulted by mothers are those related to check-ups, symptoms and signs that require urgent care, common symptoms in pregnancy, information on the first trimester and on opportunities and rights for maternity and paternity (protection, parental leave)”. “The App” – Perini recalled – “can be downloaded for free from the main stores (Android and iOS), is accessible in Italian, English and French and protects personal data also thanks to authentication with SPID and CIE”.

In the hall in Malè there were about fifty people (plus about thirty streaming, including some mothers, APSS staff, mayors and councilors of Val di Sole, who in their talks stressed the importance of these meetings because they allow not only to network between institutions, but above all to share projects and initiatives that allow to better direct political choices and provide guidance on these issues.
