KRAKEN project: pilots preparation

Trento, 24/5/2022 – KRAKEN is reaching to its end, achieving its targets of enabling the sharing, brokerage, and trading of  in a marketplace platform in a privacy and secure way, providing citizens with the control of their data. Within the KRAKEN project, which consists of a Consortium with 10 partners from 7 EU countries, FBK will use its experience in defining interactive systems that includethe use of personal data (such as health data) and which are addressed to different user profiles (patients, healthcare professionals, etc.). FBK will provide useful user-centered platform design tools to identify usage requirements, to define use scenarios, and the usability tests for the platform.

Atos, a global leader in Privacy-preserving, Cybersecurity and Digital Transformation, participates in the KRAKEN project as coordinator of the Consortium.

The development of the two of three pillars of KRAKEN that provide privacy and confidentiality of the data have been finished: the Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) approach and set of analytic techniques based on advance cryptographic tools.

The SSI behaves as an identity management which ensures the security and privacy of users’ identity data in a decentralized way using Verifiable Credentials (VC), giving owners of digital identities complete control and guaranteeing the data integrity.  The solution consists of a mobile app for users, a backup system that allows users to operate with multiple devices or VC recovery and crypto-key material to protect the information of the device.

On the side of cryptographic technologies for privacy-preserving applications, KRAKEN applies Secure Multiparty Computation (SMPC), which allows a group of parties to jointly compute analytics on the data queries from consumers without revealing those inputs or learning the data itself.

Both pillars are being integrated with the third one, the marketplace, and the combined platform will be validated in the second round of pilots to prove the feasibility of the solution, demonstrating the value in terms of scalability and performance that could bring to different stakeholders.






During the whole development, all legal and ethical requirements were analysed by the Legal specialist partner and then applied accordingly by the implementation team.

It will be in a second validation in education pilot, where KRAKEN solution will allow students to present their academic diplomas as Verifiable Credentials backed by project blockchain technology in a privacy-preserving way and digital service providers in European education area to analyse this data without compromising the student´s privacy.

The health pilot will validate the solution that enables data providers to control and regulate the use of the data they produce leveraging the SSI solution to access to the marketplace and will allow data consumers to gain access to high-quality aggregated data for their work in a straightforward and seamless way.

KRAKEN project is currently involved in a close collaboration with several other European projects like CyberSec4Europe, Arcadian-IOT, Infinitech or DE4A in the identity-related field of innovation, sharing its research activities and different outcomes with the rest of the participants.

Activities related to the exploitation of the outcomes of KRAKEN are being planned by partners, performing a deep analysis of the current market and its possibilities, and how to manage properly the IPR.

Consortium partners keep on disseminating the results of the project participating actively in events and initiatives, and writing specific publications, from scientific papers to brief posts on web blog, related to the key aspects of KRAKEN.
